Autumn fatigue: Why it occurs and how to boost your energy

With the arrival of autumn, some people may experience increased fatigue, sleepiness, lower energy, or mood swings. This condition is commonly referred to as "autumn fatigue," but it is not a separate medical diagnosis. Factors that may play a key role include changes in daylight, adjustments to daily routines, less time spent outdoors, or changes in physical activity habits. See how you can support your daily routine and maintain sufficient energy during the autumn months.

Do you also feel what is known as "autumn fatigue"?

This feeling is real, but it is not a standalone medical diagnosis. It is more of a summary of difficulties that some people experience during the transition from summer to autumn. The main cause is usually rapidly decreasing daylight. This can shift the internal biological clock, affect the production of melatonin and serotonin, and cause:

  • greater sleep iness, especially in the morning,
  • lower energy and poorer concentration,
  • greater cravings for sweets and carbohydrates,
  • worse mood or irritability,
  • a need for more sleep.

Our needs and daily rhythm change in autumn

This is compounded by a change in routine after summer, returning to work or school, less outdoor activity, colder weather, and the onset of viral infections. In addition to fatigue, long-term low mood, loss of interest, overeating, and oversleeping are also typical.

What usually helps:

  • at least 30–60 minutes outdoors in the morning or early afternoon, even if it is overcast,
  • regular exercise,
  • waking up and going to sleep at approximately the same time,
  • not overdoing it with alcohol and heavy food in the evening,
  • sufficient protein and fluids,
  • a normal varied diet and, if necessary, high-quality and well-considered food supplements.
